“Understanding the rights held by Indigenous peoples has been both a professional and personal journey for me. Professionally, in 1993 I embarked on a graduate program at the University of Calgary studying what is now known as the Duty to Consult and Accommodate. I’ve never stopped learning; about treaties, Aboriginal rights, genocidal policies implemented by Canada and how the law in this field influences everything.”
Personally, my focus on the toxic relationship between Canada and Indigenous peoples hits very close to home. If Canada had been successful with their genocidal assimilation policies, my family would not be here. I would not have the job I have today. But we are still here, and so are treaty and Aboriginal rights, now with constitutional protections. Now the important task is forcing Canada to honour the treaty promises they made to share land, resources and a room for a way of life, and live up to the promise of Section 35.
I have no hobbies to speak of, other than meddling in my adult children’s lives. I do have a passion for birdwatching which may turn into a full-time pursuit as soon as this whole honouring treaty-thing is solved.
